In light of the recent global increase in fires related to lithium batteries on aircraft, and based on deliberations and adoption by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) will revise safety standards for transporting power banks on aircraft.

Accordingly, the rules regarding the number of power banks allowed on board and charging will be changed as follows.

Key changes

・No more than 2 (two) power banks are allowed per passenger (each 160Wh or less).*1

・Charging power banks via in-seat power outlets or USB ports is prohibited. *2

・The use of power banks for the purpose of charging other electronic devices is prohibited while onboard the aircraft.

*1: Due to anticipated changes to International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations, the limit may be reduced to 100Wh from January 2027.

*2: Spring Japan does not provide facilities for charging electronic devices or power banks on board its aircrafts.
